A relentless crowd
Like rapids
Shoving him to either side
Side by side
A bumpy ride
With legs instead of cars
Legs instead of kayaks
Legs and their lifelong sentence
Like Atlas holding the sky
He looks up, imagining the stars
He wishes were there
Instead of the hazy smoggy
Poison sky
As suffocating as the crowd around him
Gasping for air
He steps up the stairs
Emerging from the river of souls
And watching it flow
Until it is time
To dive back in
